Dental Crowns in Milton Keynes
We apply dental crowns to restore a tooth that has become too damaged to function properly. They mimic the natural look and function of a tooth.
A dental crown is a cap that a dentist fits over a damaged tooth. Once fitted, it feels completely natural and functions like a normal tooth. At our Milton Keynes practice, we use crowns to cover the surface of the tooth, helping to protect your remaining tooth structure from further damage.
Your dentist will assess the condition of your teeth and may recommend a dental crown if they feel it is likely to improve your smile, tooth function, or overall oral health.
A crown fitting takes place over multiple appointments. To start with, your dentist will take an impression or digital scan of your mouth and send it off to a registered dental laboratory, where a qualified dental technician will manufacture your bespoke dental crowns.
At your follow-up appointment, your dentist will fit your dental crown and fix it in place with a special adhesive.
When You Might Need A Dental Crown
A dentist may recommend a crown for a number of reasons. Common ones include:
- Protecting a tooth that has been weakened by decay
- Restoring a tooth that has broken or worn down
- Holding a cracked tooth together
- Covering a discoloured or misshapen tooth
- Supporting a large filling where little natural tooth remains
- Completing treatments such as root canals or dental implants
If any of these sound familiar, our Milton Keynes team can assess the tooth and advise whether a crown is the right option for you.
Caring For Your Dental Crown
With a little everyday care, a well-fitted crown can last for many years. Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth as normal, paying attention to the gum line where the crown meets your natural tooth. It is worth being mindful of very hard foods, and if you grind your teeth at night, do let us know, as a night guard can help protect your crown.
Regular check-ups at our Milton Keynes practice allow us to keep an eye on the crown and the tooth beneath it, so anything can be caught early.
